Open

"My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises." Psalm 119:148

When you close your eyes, what do you see? Nothing. Pitch black. No color of any kind. No picture. No abstracts. No perspective. If we close the eyes of our heart, can you explain the seriousness of this condition?

When we contemplate Scripture, God's very personal message to us, it moves our hearts toward Him - sometimes it even inspires a song! It enables us to look up and see with "spiritual eyes" instead of focusing on ourselves and earthly problems. It corrects our "perspective".

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. " 2 Corinthians 4:16

When our "spiritual eyes" are closed shut, we do not understand the troubles we're wrestling with. We cannot grasp that God's love is greater than our pain. We do not kneel before God to help us in our time of great need. And we don't understand all that life is!

I encourage you, as you go through your daily routine, to keep a portion of Scripture - whether it's what you've read, heard from a minister, discussed with a friend, or heard in a song - in your thoughts. Put is down on a Post-it note on your car dashboard or on the mirror in your bathroom or on the refrigerator door. Remind yourself of it regularly. What does it really mean? How can you apply it to your life? Pray that the Lord will enlighten you and bring appropriate verses to mind as you need them, especially during a time of trouble.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,
Open the eyes of my heart,
I want to see You...
I want to see You...

To see You high and lifted up,
Shining in the midst of Your glory,
Lord, pour our Your power and love,
As we sing, Holy, Holy, Holy....

Beautiful song! One of my favorite! Not only do we want our "eyes open" to see God's truth in Scripture and in the world, but as this prayerful song says, we want to see God for who He is and understand Him as fully as we can with all of our earthly struggles and limitations.

Let's pray: Lord, we long "..to see You high and lifted up.." and "..shining in the midst of Your glory!" We humbly ask that You, "..pour out Your power and love, as we sing, 'Holy, Holy, Holy..'" I can't imagine closing my "spiritual eyes" before You and walk blindly the rest of my earthly life. I pray that, not only me but the rest of those who loves You, will stand in awe of Your beautiful light through Your Word and the examples of the faithful. We must fall down to our knees, bowed down in humility - overwhelmed by gratitude and amazement at the thought of You wanting us to know You and have fellowship with You!

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord. I want to see You.
